Hurricane Andrew
Hurricane Andrew was, at the time of its occurrence in August 1992,
the most destructive hurricane in United States history
In the aftermath of the
Hurricane,
increased demand resulted in a spike in lumber prices by approximately 35%.
Prior to the hurricane, the market price for used or
recycled wooden pallets
averaged 50% of the price of new.
Due to the sudden shortage of lumber, whole industry sectors like the automotive manufacturing industry
began to buy used wooden pallets.
This new market dynamics pushed the value of recycled pallets to 65% of new, but new post hurricane
prices equated to 135% of pre hurricane prices.
The net result is that recycled pallets doubled in price overnight.
